Introduction box with text, Organisation – A fundamental feature of the RNBT is that the substantial majority of trustees and other volunteer members are serving and ex-serving RN ratings and RM other ranks. This dates back to principles established in 1916 when the Grand Fleet Fund, the forerunner of the RNBT was founded by Admiral Sir John Jellicoe. Naval ship leaving the coast for the sea

A Charity with a Royal Charter

The RNBT is a charity (registered no. 206243) registered with the Charity Commission. It is incorporated under a Royal Charter granted on 2 May 1922.

Patron

We are honoured to have His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales KG KT GCB OM as our Patron.

Vice Patrons

From time to time Vice Patrons are appointed; at present there are two:

Lieutenant General Sir Steuart Pringle Bt KCB DSc, a former Commandant General Royal Marines
Mr K J Pritchard CB MA, a former Director of Greenwich Hospital

Governance

The Royal Charter calls for the governing body of the RNBT to be known as the Central Committee and its members are the trustees of the charity. The committee comprises the Governors, President, Honorary Treasurer (also the Vice President) and the Ordinary Members. The charter also allows for a smaller Executive Committee to address the detail of running the charity that comprises a single Governor (the Admiralty Governor – see below) the President, Honorary Treasurer and certain Ordinary Members.

In effect, the Central Committee meet quarterly to manage the affairs of the Trust so that all trustees are fully involved. Their work is informed by 3 standing sub-committees whose task it is to address the detail of the Trust’s work and where necessary, put up resolutions for the Central Committee to consider and take forward.

In addition, there are 3 area committees – Plymouth, Portsmouth and Scotland & Northern Ireland. Their role includes promoting the RNBT, liaising with other service and ex-service organisations, carrying out casework and contributing to the management of the Trust through their representation on the main and standing sub committees. The area committees are principally composed of Ordinary Members.

Governors

The Governors are also Trustees. Three are senior serving officers who hold their positions within the Trust by virtue of their RN appointments and are usually represented at committee by a serving officer of Captain’s rank. The fourth Governor is a retired senior officer appointed by the Admiralty Board; he is known as the “Admiralty Governor.”

The President

A retired senior officer appointed by the Admiralty Board, currently Commodore Peter Swan Royal Navy

The Vice President and Honorary Treasurer

A serving or ex-serving RN rating or RM other rank elected by the Central Committee, currently Mr John Thompson MBE BEM, a former Chief Petty Officer Air Engineering Artificer (L)

Ordinary Members

There are 12 Ordinary Members who are serving or ex-serving RN ratings or RM other ranks. The three Area Committees each provide four Ordinary Members – their Chairman, Deputy Chairman and two others.

Staff

The Trust employs a staff led by a Chief Executive. The duties of the staff at Castaway House, the RNBT Headquarters in Portsmouth, include grants administration, finance, public relations and fundraising. At Pembroke House there is a full staff to meet the care needs of the residents and administer the home.
