Denis Cole was living in Gillingham when he was called to serve in the Navy during the Second World War . He trained as a telegraphist and worked overseas on board ship and in shore bases in Durban and Aden. He retells his stories in his memoirs.
This illustrated memoir shows the war from different perspectives through Denis’s memories of evacuation, his first job, Home Guard duties, basic naval and telegraphy training, including Morse Code and subequent naval deployment. The narrative is interlaced with details of his love for teacher, Marjorie, his childhood sweetheart and show us how fate and the decisions of others played their part in his safe return home to marry her.
