5 Hours of grueling grading…A mile run and a mere 1000 punches and 1000 kicks and all for raising funds for RNBT, oh and to achieve a Black Belt in Kickboxing.
Laura Grant got into kickboxing through a scheme to get young people (under 25) involved in sport. It was an 8 week program where she began training once a week at a Ladies Only class that she attended with friends and enjoyed it a great deal, when Laura was asked if she would like to join at the end of the trial period of course she jumped at the chance.
A decision that would ultimately change her life. Having not done exercise since leaving school, it was fair to say it was a shock to the system, but as time went on her fitness improved and her love for the sport grew. Laura had the bug and started to attend 2 of the Ladies Only classes and was persuaded to join the adult’s class on a Wednesday.
Recalling the earlier days Laura said “I remember feeling very daunted at the time, it was a big step up from what I had been use to in the previous classes, little did I know this would lead to me joining intermediate classes and later advanced”.
She then started tutoring new students and helping with warm ups on the mats, which led Sensei to invite her to join their coaching team. Laura jumped at the opportunity, and is currently studying to receive her Sports of England accredited qualification to become a coach in Kickboxing and Ji-Jitsu.
As her technical ability increased she then also began being put forward for competitions and did her first one in March this year. Training increased to 5 days a week and through hard work and perseverance, Laura was rewarded with a win in her last fight at the Battle of Kent fight in October.
Laura was then invited to complete her Black Belt grading in October and since then she hasn’t looked back, training in every class that she can and physically preparing herself for the challenges that lay ahead!
Speaking to Laura “What ever the outcome I think it’s fair to say kickboxing has changed my life – I’m over 2 stone lighter, more confident, fitter and ready for the next physical challenge! Watch this space!”
