Introduction box with text, News & Events – The Trust takes every possible opportunity to engage with our beneficiaries and their families by attending events across the country. As we are unable to visit every area on a regular basis we publish matters of local or national interest in the press and other media. The Second Sea Lord, Vice Admiral Sir Alan Massey KCB CBE ADC, was the guest of honour at the RNBT’s annual presentation on 8 October at HMS NELSON Wardroom. The Trust’s President, His Excellency Vice Admiral Sir Fabian Malbon KBE, the Lieutenant Governor of Guernsey, was also present and the Chairman, Commodore Peter Swan Royal Navy, hosted the proceedings. The event was attended by nearly 180 people, which included uniformed personnel from many ships and shore establishments, as well as personnel from other charitable organisations that help the RNBT Family. There were video clips from beneficiaries of the Trust telling their stories of how they and their families had been helped by RNBT. CPO Sue Mark, a member of the Grants Committee, spoke of how important it was to her to be able to help people when it was most needed. Mrs Jo Trembeth, the Home Manager at Pembroke House (the Trust’s care home in Gillingham, Kent) gave an update on events and happenings in the home. The Second Sea Lord spoke very warmly about the work of the Trust and pledged to do what he could to promote the work of the RNBT within the serving community. He recognised the importance of fresh volunteers coming forward as both Trustees and members of the RNBT’s Grant Committee. The Grants committee meets twice weekly (Monday & Thursday) every week of the year apart from Bank Holidays to deal with the 100 or so applications for assistance that come into the Trust every week from serving and former sailors and Royal Marines. The event was even more memorable by the presentation of commemorative glassware to 2 staff members at Castaway House, in recognition of long service to the Trust. Mr Chris Chatfield and Mrs Karen Pratt have both worked for the Trust for the last fifteen years. The RNBT exists for the benefit of serving and former Royal Navy and Royal Marine personnel up to and including the rank of Warrant Officer and their dependants (the RNBT Family) in need or distress. The Trust not only provides funds to members of the RNBT Family to help with needs that include medical treatment and disability aids, household goods and repairs, food, clothing and fuel and childcare but also runs Pembroke House for those no longer able to live independently. The RNBT depends on donations and legacies to balance its income and welcomes financial contributions. Further detail on the Trust including events where representatives will be in attendance and available for a chat may be found on the Trust’s website www.rnbt.org.uk and the Navy’s intranet within the Second Sea Lord’s domain.
